The Streets of Tombstone…

Tombstone, Arizona. The iconic “Gunfight at the OK Corral” lasted all of 30 seconds and occurred here on an October day in 1881. The mythic struggle between good and evil found high expression in this event and will be forever embedded in the collective psyche of countless generations.

It’s been nearly 20 years since I last visited this place, and then only for an afternoon. This time, traveling in my Gypsywagen, I have the luxury of spending a few days here. A lot at the south end of town allows campers to park and stay for a modest nightly fee. With a camping spot secured, I’m free to just wander and roam around. This may be the most well preserved town from the era of the “Wild West”. Walking around in the crisp Spring air, seeing many Old West re-enactors standing on street corners and driving stage coaches, one gets a sense of having been there, all those years ago, when the likes of Doc Holiday and Wyatt Earp cast their shadows on these streets.

From here, I’ll ride on to the Chiricahua Mountains and Cochise Stronghold, where other legends were born and live on. As Shakespeare once wrote, “These stories will be told in languages yet unknown and in countries yet unborn.”
